Scott Rodgville Re-Elected Treasurer of Board of Directors of Paul’s Place, Inc.

Scott D. Rodgville, CPA, Officer at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A., has been re-elected Treasurer of the Board of Directors of Paul’s Place, Inc. This will be his second three-year term as Treasurer for the organization’s Board of Directors.

Paul’s Place, Inc. advocates change and improvement of quality of life for residents of Washington Village/ Pigtown and the surrounding neighborhoods in Southwest Baltimore. The organization has served the community for over twenty years and offers more than a dozen services and programs to low-income individuals and families. Such programs and services include providing hot lunch five days a week, an adult basic literacy program, a nurses’ clinic and an affordable housing program.

Scott leads the firm’s Not-for-Profit service area and focuses on not-for-profit and employee benefit plan clients. In 2006, he was named one of the “Top 40 Accountants” in Maryland by SmartCEO Magazine. Scott received his CPA certification in 1998 and his M.S. in Taxation from the University of Baltimore in 2001. Additionally, he is on the Board of Directors of the American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF).

Ronald D. Rudich Appointed to the Institute of Business Appraisers’ Board of Governors

Ronald D. Rudich, CPA/ABV/CFF, Director of Business Valuation and Litigation Support Services at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the Institute of Business Appraisers (IBA). His three year term begins on June 11, 2011.

The IBA’s Board of Governors is comprised of ten individuals from across the country whose responsibilities include course and product development, research, authorship and the organization’s mentor program. Additionally, the Board provides leadership, supports innovative services and promotes a high level of proficiency and professionalism among its members.

The IBA was established in 1978 and is the oldest professional society devoted to the appraisal of closely-held businesses. It is a nationally recognized membership organization that provides professional accreditation and business appraisal education.

Ronald has over 30 years of experience in business valuation. He is Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) and Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) accredited by the American Institute of CPAs. Ronald’s expertise includes forensic accounting, strategic business planning, business consulting, and forecasting services. He is a Certified Business Appraiser (CBA), Business Valuator Accredited for Litigation (BVAL) and Accredited in Business Appraisal Review (ABAR) accredited by The Institute of Business Appraisers, a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) accredited by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, a Certified Machinery & Equipment Appraiser (CMEA) accredited by the NEBB Institute, a Senior Business Analyst (SBA) accredited by The Society if Business Analysts, and a Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) accredited by the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors.

Evelyn Brunner Selected as Chair of Education Committee of Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce

Evelyn Brunner, CPA, CVA, Chief Operating Officer at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has been selected to Chair the Education Committee of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce.

The Education Committee works to promote awareness of the education system and its needs by creating relationships between business, education and the community. The committee is also charged with administering the annual Merit Scholarship program and organizing the annual Teachers’ Awards for Excellence and determining the winners.

Evelyn is also on the Board of Directors of Suited to Succeed. She is a past president of the Reisterstown-Owings Mills-Glyndon Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Trustees of The Community College of Baltimore County for ten years.

Steve O’Brien Accepted into BVU’s 2011 GIVE Class

Steven O’Brien, Senior Staff Auditor at Gorfine, Schiller and Gardyn, P.A., has been selected to participate in the 2011 class of Business Volunteers Unlimited Maryland’s Getting Involved with Volunteer Experience (GIVE) program.

The GIVE initiative introduces young professionals to civic leadership through volunteer opportunities, workshops and learning seminars. GIVE classmates spend two years learning about issues facing the Baltimore community and developing leadership skills. The experience culminates in a volunteer board position with a local nonprofit organization. Participants also gain hands-on experience by serving on the GIVE advisory board.

Steven has been with Gorfine, Schiller and Gardyn, P.A. since July 2008. He specializes in not-for-profit audits and is currently working towards his CPA.

Ronald D. Rudich appointed Chair of ABAR task force

Ronald D. Rudich, CPA/ABV/CFF, Director of Business Valuation and Litigation Support Services at Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has been appointed Chair of the Accredited in Business Appraisal Review’s (ABAR) Appeals Task Force.

The ABAR credential enables a business appraiser to provide quality assurance to stakeholders in the business appraisal process by reviewing the reports of other certified appraisers; in essence, the expert’s expert. The Appeals Task Force provides technical guidance and support on ABAR reviews. In this capacity, Ronald will be responsible for preparing comments on voluntarily submitted requests for reviews of ABAR engagements.ABAR is a certification offered by The Institute of Business Appraisers (IBA). GSG Ranked 9th largest CPA firm in Baltimore

Gorfine, Schiller and Gardyn, P.A. of Owings Mills and Hagerstown, MD has been ranked the 9th largest accounting firm by the Baltimore Business Journal’s 2011 Book of Lists. GSG was ranked the 10th largest CPA firm the previous two years.

GSG Welcomes New Staff

Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. is pleased to announce the following additions to our staff:

Theresa M. Higgins, CPA, CVA joins GSG as a Senior Business Valuator with over 7 years of experience in the valuation of closely-held companies. She previously held positions as Controller for firms in the restaurant, staff leasing and financial services industries. Theresa graduated from the University of Maryland in 1998 and received her CPA certification in 1999.

Nichol M. Moeller joins GSG’s small business department as a staff accountant. She was previously employed at a local accounting firm as a staff accountant. Nichol graduated from McDaniel College in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Adminstration and a minor in Accounting.

Victoria Hitchcock joins GSG’s audit department as a staff auditor. She graduated from Towson University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. She was previously employed at a local accounting firm where she prepared audits, financial statements and tax returns.

Carole L. Hinton joins GSG as an administrative assistant. She was previously employed at a local accounting firm in Mt. Airy, MD.

Garrett Elligson joins GSG as an intern in the tax department. He is currently a student at the University of Baltimore and will graduate in the fall of 2011 with a degree in Accounting. Prior to GSG, Garrett worked for Microtech Engineering and Southern States Cooperative.

Sylvester B. Savoy, Jr. joins GSG as an intern in the audit department. He is currently a student at Towson University and will graduate in the Spring of 2011 with a double major in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. He was previously an intern at a local accounting firm in Towson.

Douglas M. Lederman Elected Vice Chairman of Board of Directors of Northwest Hospital

Douglas M. Lederman, CPA and Officer to Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has been elected Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Northwest Hospital. He previously served as the Board’s Treasurer.

Northwest Hospital is a not-for-profit organization located in Randallstown, MD. It was established in 1962 as Liberty Court Rehabilitation Center, became Baltimore County General Hospital the following year, and was renamed Northwest Hospital in June 1993. The hospital operates on it commitment to exceptional quality care and service.

Mr. Lederman has over 30 years of experience in taxation with a special focus on tax planning, personal financial planning, and estate planning for high net worth individuals. He has been featured on Maryland Public Broadcasting shows and in The Baltimore Sun for his expertise in tax and related financial matters. Mr. Lederman serves on the Board of Directors of The ASSOCIATEDL: The Jewish Federation of Baltimore and the Herman Maril Foundation. He is a member of the budget and finance committee of The ASSOCIATED: The Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and LifeBridge Health Systems, Inc.

Effective October 1, 2010— Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. announces the relocation of its Hagerstown office to 240 South Potomac Street. The certified public accounting and business consulting firm previously occupied the office space at 47 North Potomac Street in Hagerstown.

Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. Shows Continued Support for The Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake

Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has made an ongoing commitment to the Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake. The certified public accounting and business consulting firm sends volunteers several times a year to demolish, drill, hammer and paint on construction sites. All levels of staff are encouraged to participate in volunteer days. Since 2008, over 26 staff members have worked on six Habitat houses throughout Baltimore city. The firm will complete their fifth volunteer day in September.

“We decided to make a long-term commitment to Habitat for Humanity in order to make a connection to the organization’s mission and the people it serves,” says Partner Barry Bondroff. “We wanted to be a part of the ongoing progress that Habitat makes in Baltimore, not just show up for one day and never return.”

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that works with families in need to provide simple, decent and affordable homes. Houses are sold to qualifying homebuyers at no profit. Volunteers work alongside homebuyers, who must complete “sweat equity” hours. The Chesapeake affiliate works on homes in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County.

Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, P.A. has a strong history of donating time and resources to not-for-profit organizations. In addition to their work with Habitat for Humanity, over the past year GSG staff has participated in a Bowl-A-Thon benefiting Junior Achievement, BVU’s Elf Night, and the 2010 Mud Volleyball Tournament benefiting the Community Free Clinic in Hagerstown, MD. Many of the firm’s partners, principals and senior managers also sit on not-for-profit boards.
